Cowboy Days
The West was the country of his dreams. With a passion for the freedom of the western frontier and the world of the cowboy, Gissing arrived from England in the spring of 1913. For 10 years he worked on ranches from Alberta’s Peace River country as far South as Mexic0.

For more than fifty years he called himself a Canadian and never said he wanted or wished he could go back to England. He never did go back, not even for a visit because he couldn’t bear to miss a spring, summer, fall or winter in Alberta.

A sensitive romantic and realist honed in the western outdoor tradition, Gissing stood by the banks of the Ghost west of Cochrane contemplating where to put his cabin. With a single-minded determination that was to become his trademark, he set out to develop his artistic talent. Painting would become his life's work.

Gissing’s watercolor cowboy’s represent some of the last images captured in this medium. He settled in oils exclusively for which he became renowned.
